When I set out to design these lekku, I had a few very key goals in mind:
- The seams needed to be as small and easily hidden as can be so that that going without a headwrap was an option.
- They needed to be flexible, and look good pulled over the shoulder without awkward, cloth-like wrinkling or folding.
- It needed to be easily painted, to allow for more wild & crazy tattoo designs.
- Most importantly, they needed to be visible from the front. Too often with my old lekku, if I was looking at you straight on, you couldn’t even tell I had lekku on at all. These ones needed to be super visible!
So when sculpting these, I took extra care to sculpt the tails out to the side a bit more, and to give them a higher arch than I’ve seen from other lekku models. I didn’t want it to be as exaggerated as that famous “Darth Talon” statue but I definitely wanted them to be noticeable. It took several attempts to find just the right arch, that looked good & not comical.
They are cast out of latex (or, for those with latex allergies, they can also come in a synthetic non-latex rubber) which allows them to be easily painted any which way. Unlike silicone which is notoriously difficult to paint, glue, or change in any way, these latex lekku are incredibly easy to work with. Using just a bit of Cabopatch or Prosaide Cream, one can hide the seam entirely with enough practice.
In order to keep them as flexible as possible, as well as combat latex’s tendency to fold oddly when bent, the lekku are stuffed with one of the most flexible foams on the market, giving them tons of wiggle & sway when you walk! They’ll prop up on your shoulder easily with only minimal wrinkling, and look very natural.
These lekku are my pride and joy, and after years of work to perfect my methods, I hope you’ll enjoy them to! Whether you’re planning a canon character, or your own original character, these lekku will be the perfect addition to really bring your Twi’lek to life!
All of the lekku colors listed above are based on colors available in European Body Part’s “Endura” brand of Alcohol-based bodypaint. It is the brand I recommend most for a long lasting, durable paint job.
Everyone’s skin is different, though, so I have a tutorial for all the other brands you might want to try!
