PRE-ORDER: “Talon” Flexible Silicone Cosplay Lekku

My pride and joy, the result of years of learning, trial and error, blood, sweat, tears, the whole thing.  Silicone lekku that are flexible and lifelike.  A Twi’lek headpiece that swings and sways when you walk, can wrap around your neck luxuriously… this is my dream come true.

Why is Silicone the best for lekku?

There are a number of different materials that work for lekku: latex, cloth, foam, and silicone.  Each has its own pros and cons, of course, which means you have to weigh the options.  Do you want lekku with a believable skin-like texture?  Cloth and foam can’t do that.  Do you want lekku that swing and bend naturally?  Latex struggles with that.  Silicone is the only material in the bunch that can do both.  It comes with its own downsides as well, of course, but the tradeoff is well worth it.  After all, there’s a reason why Lucasfilm used silicone for Aayla Secura’s appearance in the prequel trilogy.

Some of the things to keep in mind about silicone lekku:

  • Closer texture to skin than foam or cloth
    • Some say it’s even better than latex for feeling like skin, though this is a bit more subjective
  • More flexible than latex
    • Latex tends to fold like clothing when bent.  Twi’leks who try to wrap latex lekku around their neck are rarely satisfied with the appearance
  • Heavier than all of the above
    • Silicone is a dense material
    • My lekku are cast hollow, then filled with a lightweight foam to make sure they don’t weigh too much
  • Nothing sticks to silicone
    • Normal glues or paints simply fall right off
    • Each of my lekku are dyed a specific color during the casting process, which ensures their color lasts forever
    • Specialized silicone paints can be used for details like stripes, tattoos, etc.
  • Silicone does not cause allergic reactions

As you can imagine, silicone isn’t the perfect answer for every project.  But for an alien headpiece that needs to look exactly like skin, but still swing behind you as you move your head?  Silicone is the only answer that gets the job done.

Painting Options

Since these lekku are made with silicone, they are very difficult to paint.  Almost nothing sticks to silicone, except for a few specialty brands of paint made for silicone appliances.

When I make the lekku, I add dye to the silicone before casting, to give it a base color.  This helps ensure the lekku are a solid, even coloring from top to bottom that never fades.  As such, there isn’t really an “unpainted” option.

If you’d like me to paint on additional designs for you, I’d be more than happy to.  I included a couple of basic design ideas in the dropdowns above, or if you have your own idea you can select “custom” and we can discuss what the designs should look like.

If you really want to try your hand at painting your own designs on, just “Solid Color” and I’ll just provide the base dye, along with some tips on which brands of paint to buy.  Be warned – you will probably need an airbrush. (If you need help getting started with an airbrush, I do have a tutorial you can check out as well.)

Pre-Ordering Details

Currently I have a couple prototypes of my silicone lekku.  They look great, they feel great, and they’re a wonderful proof-of-concept.  But there are still some things I need to perfect before I’m ready to send them out.

  • I’m still working on getting rid of the seam lines.  Making them appear perfectly seamless is a challenge, for sure, but with every prototype I am getting closer
  • As mentioned above, painting silicone is an adventure.  I’m getting some practice under my belt
  • Working on some tutorials so that when they do ship, you’ll be armed with all the knowledge you need for getting the most out of them

Pricing is still in the air – it may go up by the time I begin shipping.  However, the price you agree to when you place your pre-order will be honored during shipping.  Please note there is no expected ship date.  I will ship once I am satisfied that I have perfected the things mentioned above.  I don’t want to ship an imperfect product, so please only pre-order if you are able to wait.

Down-payments are available.  A $150 down payment secures your place in line, and the rest can be paid off at your convenience.  We can do multiple payments, or finish it off in a lump sum.  It’s completely up to you.  Please note that I do not ship before full payment has completed.
