Rio Ca’tal is an original character of mine from the Star Wars universe. She is a Twi’lek Mandalorian, trained as an “Infiltration & Acquisition Specialist.” Which is a fancy way of saying she’s a thief. Rio is also one of the main characters of the upcoming fan series “Star Wars: Outlaws” where she travels aboard the ship Desperado II on a quest to find their fortunes in the galaxy.
Rio is an accomplished sniper, skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and equipped with high tech armor full of all kinds of useful gadgets. After several years of cosplaying her, I’ve come up with over a dozen outfits, costumes, & variations. This outfit is her bikini, and just like everything she does, it is as glamorous and stylish as can be. Truly one-of-a-kind.
Soft Parts (Bikini)
The bikini was made by the company Fit2btied Clothing. Their bikinis are top notch – they fit perfectly, are well constructed, and can do almost any style imaginable. They specialize in nerdy bikinis, too. I personally own three bikinis from them: A Zero Suit Samus bikini, a Hydra (Marvel) bikini, and this custom-made one for my Twi’lek. I highly recommend them to any ladies looking for an awesome, nerdy design for the pool or the beach.
Lekku (The Headpiece)
Rio’s lekku are my pride and joy. When I first started cosplaying, I received a pair of latex lekku as a gift, and Rio was born about 3 weeks later! I loved those old lekku, and dressed up in them at least once a month for two years. Over time, however, I began to get frustrated with how stiff the latex lekku were. So I began searching for something more flexible… and I came up empty. Every other lekku maker I could find made them stiff, as well.
So I began my quest to make them myself! It took several years of studying, trial and error, and making very expensive mistakes, but eventually, I figured it out! Now, I have a prototype set of silicone lekku that has a wonderful, skin-like texture similar to latex… but is much, MUCH more flexible. I’m getting ready to start taking orders for lekku, so if you’re interested, you will want to sign up for my newsletter so you can stay up-to-date on their progress!
For the painting, I use an inexpensive airbrush setup that allows me to spray nice, even coatings in half the time of applying it by hand. You can read my Bodypaint Equipment guide for more info on which tools I use specifically. For the orange color, I chose Temptu as the bodypaint brand. It’s an alcohol paint with fantastic durability, I use it for a lot of my painted costumes. Rio was my first painted character, so I went through a couple of other brands before finding Temptu. But once I tried their beautiful blue color, I knew I had a winner. I haven’t looked back since.
An extra note, because it’s an alcohol based paint, it is completely waterproof, which let me do this watery photoshoot while painted head to toe, and no worries of it washing off as I splashed around in the water.
